Vanaf heden maakt Niels weer deel uit van het Nederlands team. De intentie is nog deze week een contract met de KNSB te ondertekenen t/m het schaatsseizoen 2009-2010.

Na de eerste worldcups in Salt Lake City en Vancouver besloot Niels in overleg met bondscoach John Monroe en zijn LA coach Wilma Boomstra per direct terug te gaan naar Nederland. Belangrijkste reden is dat Niels samen wil gaan trainen met het team waarmee hij het uiteindelijk moet gaan doen richting de Olympische Spelen. Ook zijn de faciliteiten in Nederland beter.

Eerder koos Niels voor een voorbereiding in Los Angeles omdat hij het gevoel had dat hij zijn pad daar nog niet afgemaakt had. Na opnieuw een half jaar met Wilma Boomstra getraind te hebben, heeft hij nu de stappen gezet die hij wilde zetten en kan hij zichzelf grotendeels bijsturen. 

Afgelopen maandag heeft Niels zich in Heerenveen bij het Nederlands team gevoegd. Daar zijn zij in voorbereiding op de tweede serie worldcups in Nagano en Beijing.
